Midtown Crossing is inviting local artists to join one of Omaha’s most vibrant celebrations of community – the second annual Omaha Chalk Art Festival. Interested artists should click here for application details, including the $1,000 prize for the “Best of Show” artist. The deadline to submit is August 9, 2019.
The Chalk Art Festival’s first year drew 5,000 attendees throughout the weekend and more than 20 participating artists. Year two is set for the weekend of Saturday, September 14, and Sunday, September 15.
The event is free and open to all who want to watch as select local artists transform sections of pavement along Farnam Street into a gallery of chalk art masterpieces. They will work alongside Madonnaris (professional chalk artists) Michael Rieger and Randy Segura who will be creating art of their own throughout the weekend.
“It’s really a performance-based art form,” Rieger, who is also the festival’s artist director, says. “You’ll see how the artists build the images and how those images come to life. It’s kind of mesmerizing.”
The chalk art festival concept is tremendously popular around the world – from Monterrey, Mexico, to Curtatone, Italy. In addition to seeing vibrant chalk art emerge before their eyes, midtown visitors will be able to enjoy live music, food, drinks and shopping on an activated Farnam Street.
